I am fascinated by the lustrous quality of light. As a watercolor artist, I find it exalts the objects it suffuses, but is also fleeting and difficult to capture. Paradoxically, light is inescapable, for without it the multicolored tapestry of life would be nothing more than a mottled gray.
The luminescence in my paintings shares time and space with my subject material. The two are intertwined, one transforming the other, in a way that elevates the finished piece beyond the mere sum of its parts. Watercolor has become the bond that ties together the light of life with the stillness of my subjects.
As an artist, I choose subjects that react to light in playful, energetic ways. The translucence of glassware, reflections off water, and the sun-struck landscape are recurring themes for me. Always striving to produce faithful representations, I have found that reference photos and careful planning compliment the stoicism of the still life pieces I favor.
My goal as an artist is to continually expand my understanding of light and the watercolor medium for which to express its qualities. Rather than grip it and bend it to my will, I wish collaborate with it to convey the immeasurable beauty light bestows on the world.
